Interview with Erin Gilchrist,
owner of A’ Tuscan Estate Bed & Breakfast

Tell us a bit about your business:  What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
A’ Tuscan Estate has been a bed & breakfast for about 17 years. We offer six guest rooms all with private baths. Our historic Colonial Revival main house was built in 1928 where we have four guest rooms on the second level including a suite complete with fireplace and private sitting area. Our 1913 Craftsman house has two larger units with full kitchens and sitting areas.

Our guests are invited to mingle in our living room in front of the fire or during warm months on our porches or in our gardens. Our rates include three-course, gourmet breakfast for up to two people which is served in our cheery dining room in the main house. Rooms also have complimentary Wi-Fi, robes, hairdryers and traditional guest room amenities.

We are ideally located within five blocks of historic downtown McMinnville and within 10 – 40 minutes’ drive time to over 500 wineries.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started?
I received my bachelor’s degree in Restaurant and Hotel Management from Purdue University and have been in hospitality industry my entire career. After running various restaurants, inns and hotels across the country, I chose to buy A’ Tuscan Estate and make McMinnville my home. I always knew I would end up in wine country and fell in love with the warm, collegial and supportive community of McMinnville and the Willamette Valley.

I was lucky to purchase the business and properties from a couple who had, over almost 11 years, built a very successful bed & breakfast with a #1 ranking on Trip Advisor in McMinnville.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business.   What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?

  1. Location—walking distance to historic downtown McMinnville and 10-40 minutes drive to over 500 wineries as well as one hour to the coast and one hour to Portland.
  2. Trip Advisor ranking of #1.
  3. Breakfast—A’ Tuscan Estate is well-known for our creative gourmet breakfasts.
  4. Thoughtfulness—we frequently are complimented on our attention to detail in our room furnishings and amenities as well as cleanliness.

How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years?
I envision the valley to continue to grow with the increased reputation of the wine industry and the growth of the beer and hop industry. I feel that McMinnville is planning well for the future with a great mixture of businesses.
