Interview with Scarlett McCaw, owner of Colorful McCaw Salon in McMinnville
Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around? I am a typical Salon in town. Currently we offer hair services and nail services. We do have two hair stations available for stylists and a side room where we hope to get someone like a makeup artist, lash technician or tattoo artist!
How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? How did the business get started? Basically, I braided horses’ tails and manes for competitions my whole growing up. When doing something with horses didn’t pan out after school, I thought I would try my hand at this!
Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition? We expanded to a bigger location just under 2 years ago! I am really known for my Specialty in A-line and feather razor haircuts as well as fun, vivid fashion hair colors! The nail technician is skilled with pedicures and creative nails with things like metallic/oil slick and soft color nails.
I don’t like to view myself as competition. All hair stylists and salons have their strengths and we should work together to get the right clients with the correct stylists. I have friends at other salons that I recommend for specific things that I am not as skilled at. We want the best for all clients for all aspects of their beauty care.
What is your favorite part of running this business? Being creative and trying new things with adventurous clients. I also really enjoy being a part of people’s lives. I get to learn about people’s experiences with birth, home lives, communities, schools, love lived and lasted, tragedies and deaths. I get to help them feel good about themselves in all these circumstances too. It is a privilege.
Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best? Clients that need their hair and nails done! :)
Are there any special promotions, annual sales, or special events that you’d like to mention? Every December I do $20 off a Deep conditioning hair treatment… this is ESPECIALLY important to those who get their hair colored regularly… adds shine and helps color retain better and for longer throughout the year.
How do you see your business growing and improving over the next couple of years? I am looking for a team of beauty industry artists that want to work together and provide a strong space that shares life together at work and works hard to help everyone be successful and compliments others with their strengths. This will provide the best options for our clients.
